Mistakes that reduce the life of your VFD

July 22 , 2022
The environment in which the drive is stored should be kept cool, clean and dry. But what if you already have a VFD? When talking to one of our field engineers about a customer who has a VFD, I asked what was the biggest mistake made while maintaining this equipment?

Based on all the advice he gave, I would like to remind you that only qualified personnel should work on electrical panels. Also, they will only work on panels with proper PPE and safety precautions. Apart from this, what else should be noted?

1. Keep the inverter and surrounding environment clean
Our field engineer didn't hesitate to say that the biggest problem he's seen is the drives and panels not being kept clean. This can cause many problems, one of the main ones being that the fans can get clogged and stop functioning properly, resulting in overheating.

If you didn't notice earlier, check with us now and change your filters. Most variable frequency inverter panels have a filter on the air inlet. Every environment and application is different, so the exact time between inspections will vary, but make sure to do it as planned. Some filters need to be replaced, some can be washed. Either way, make sure they do their job by filtering out harmful substances and letting as much clean air through as possible.

When we're doing this, we want to be safe and make sure whoever is doing it knows how to do it properly.

2. Verify Electrical Connections
Electrical connections that are not consistently verified are also common mistakes. If the drive panel is properly tuned, the technician will use a torque wrench and make sure all connections are set to the required specifications and all connections are secure. That doesn't mean they'll stay that way forever.

You should set up a schedule to periodically verify all connections to VFDs and panels. Visually inspect these connections and make sure they are tight, using a torque wrench if necessary to set them back to their original specifications.

3. Temperature monitoring
The normal VFD panel has a requirement of 0-40 degrees. But many users don't regularly check for room temperature rises or other problems. Heat is the number one cause of premature failure of all electronic equipment, including drives. Set up a normal schedule to check and record the temperature at the location where the VFD is located.

4. Moisture monitoring
Electronic products are not normally waterproof. While some panels have moisture protection, not every VFD or panel has these protections. Even if they do have fluid protection, it's best to avoid accidents that could still cause problems. Check for moisture and its potential causes regularly. Monitor piping, sources of condensation, and other problems.

Protect your frequency inverter
While there are many factors that can cause a VFD to fail over time, extending the life of most VFDs is not overly complicated. Make a plan to periodically review the items described above. If you need help with information on maintaining your VFD, or even if you want to purchase a AC drive, please contact us to communicate in detail.
